I put together a full companion page for these Tomy Sports Set games with high resolution photos, packaging scans, manuals, score sheets, gameplay details, and additional research on the rare Japanese sumo release. If you’re into vintage toys or obscure tabletop games, definitely check it out because there’s a lot there that I couldn’t fit into the video.
In this video we’ll take a deep look at the complete Tomy Sports Set line from 1980 and 1981 including Funny Football, Bumbling Boxing, Goof Around Golf, Strolling Bowling, Hop Along Hoopster, Homerun Homer, and the Japanese exclusive Party Mate Sumo set. These little wind up sports games somehow manage to be chaotic, funny, competitive, and genuinely satisfying all at the same time.
We’ll go through how each game works, the mechanics, the packaging, the original instructions, and what makes each set different from the others. Some of these were easy to track down. Others took a ridiculous amount of digging through old Japanese listings, manuals, and scorecards just to figure out how they were originally meant to be played.
If you grew up with any of these, remember seeing them in stores, or just like strange mechanical toys from the early 1980s, hopefully this helps keep a little of that history alive.
