I put together a full companion page for the Tomy Sports Set line with high resolution photos, packaging scans, manuals, gameplay details, and additional research on these strange little wind up games. Definitely check it out because there’s a lot there that I couldn’t fit into the video.
In this video we’ll take a deep look at Party Mate Sumo, the rare 1980 Japanese exclusive entry in the Tomy Sports Set line. This was by far the hardest set for me to research. I had to dig through old Japanese manuals, score sheets, packaging scans, and auction listings just to fully piece together how the game was originally meant to be played.
We’ll go through the original Japanese instructions, the hidden strategy involving arm positioning, the tournament scorecards, the packaging, and why this set feels completely different from the American releases despite sharing a lot of the same wind up DNA.
