Sediment Filters
Sediment filters are used for removing dirt, sand and other particles that contribute to what as seen as "cloudy" water. The better sediment filters use a pleated construction and generally out perform wound string, spun, melt blown (foam) or resin bonded types. A filter employing pleated construction functions better for home use because of its larger surface area to provide longer life. Generally, sediment filters work by the simple mechanical sieve action. Sediment filters have different gradients or sieve sizes. They are rated by the smallest sized particle it can trap. Sediment filters that are used on tap water come in three sieve sizes of 5, 10 and 20 microns. A good 5-micron pleated filter will give complete protection for other stages of a purification system, and is usually the first stage of a whole house system. The pleated construction type is preferred because the wound string or foam types tend to support bacterial growth, whereas with the continuous flow of water across the pleated element creates a flushing action and does not support bacterial growth.
