Why is it SO hard to make a (decent) movie about Alexander the Great? I get asked that a lot, and have asked it myself many times. I have some ideas, and the answer leans as much on my experience and training as a novelist a it does on my experience and training as a historian. So it's a place my two passions meet like a Vin Diagram.
But the TL;DW answer is: the best way to make a (good) movie about Alexander would be not to make a movie about Alexander...but about the people AROUND Alexander.
