I aligned the images from the different years using computer vision to make it easy to see the changes over the years. The images are all taken from the September month of the years from 2015 - 2023. The sequence is looped. It is shocking to me that you can see the Glacier melting away with the bare eye.
Our vantage point for capturing the Aletsch Glacier's incredible transformation is the Konkordiahütte (https://www.konkordiahuette.ch/), a mountain hut nestled amidst the Swiss Alps. Perched at an altitude of over 2,850 meters (9,350 feet), the Konkordiahütte provides us with a front-row seat to this natural spectacle.
Through this timelapse project, I aimed to illustrate the fragility of nature and the pressing need to care for our environment. The Aletsch Glacier's retreat serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of climate change, urging us to take immediate action to protect the delicate balance of our planet's ecosystems.
I zoom into two areas that clearly show that the glacier melting.
Note that besides the very saddening melting of the glacier, you can also see the movements of the ice. Take a look at the large rocks being moved by the ice at a rate of ~ 100 meters per year. Truly fascinating.
