The Good Lovelies stopped by Alberta Morning to chat with Grant Stovel.
On an album release trek through Alberta to support the brand-new LP We Will Never Be the Same, Juno-winning Ontario trio Good Lovelies stopped CKUA studios for a Fall Fundraiser visit! They gathered around a single vintage microphone in CKUA's Studio A to share intimate, acoustic versions of two songs from the record: lively album opener "Young at Heart" and the title-drop tune, "Baby I (Say What You Need)". They also shared from the heart about CKUA's role in the band's story, and their feeling for the unique character and rare value of this donor-supported broadcaster.
The described CKUA as "a mainstay" and "a huge part" of their story over the band's entire 17 year history, going all the way back to the beginning.
They said that Alberta "has been one of our home bases for the last 17 years. Like, amazing audiences!... And community radio, CKUA in particular, has such a presence, and is a big part of out story."
"We were invited into studios -- early days, when we didn't... like, we just couldn't believe it! We're like, someone's going to listen to our songs on the radio?! I mean, it sounds goofy, but it was so meaningful to go in and play so early, so that means a big part of our origin."
On the topic of CKUA's Fall Fundraiser, they say, "support's invaluable, in all senses! To have this as part of your community, to have this radio around -- it's not everywhere! This is special. Across the country, we are listening to what you're doing at CKUA. And, like, wanting to spread that good word, so more people follow your lead."
