Makram Ayache is originally from Oyen, and his play The Hooves Belonged to the Deer which is about the spiritual journey of a young queer Muslim boy in small town Alberta.
It was commissioned during the pandemic, originally as a podcast series. It was then developed in collaboration with a notable theatre company in Toronto, and the world premiere of the feature theatrical version was a sensational success earlier this year, prompting The Globe and Mail to write that it's "the most excitingly theatrical piece of new writing to premiere in Toronto so far this season." And now it's making its full-circle Alberta premiere! It runs at Edmonton's Westbury Theatre October 27 -November 4, 2023 with Makram producing, and also playing the role of Izzy.
Makram recently joined CKUA's Grant Stovel on Alberta Morning to talk about why it's so special to be bringing the play back home to Alberta; about the kind of "focus, integrity, and care" that Alberta's DIY theatre creators bring to their work; the kinds of challenges faced by all levels of live theatre these days; how art can be a positive part of a society-wide "ecology of change"; and how creations like his own latest "very Alberta story" can really land in world centres and offer unique perspectives.
