Following the amazing Alan Wake 2 I got inspired to create a unique cocktail to pay tribute to Thomas Zane and imagine what he was drinking in that memorable cutscene and recreate it. I've heard Old Fashioned and Negroni, but those are famous ones, as a mixologist I want to Go Beyond!
I got inspired by the mushroom that Zane/Barbara used in the Yötön Yö/Nightless Night movie (and that gets mentioned in a newspaper article about Zane in the game), to use a Japanese gin that I have that is made with mushrooms and that has a very unique taste.
I thought Hendrick's gin "Orbium" was a fitting choice too.
Absinthe is known as "the spirit that drives you crazy" and "the spirit that artists drink" because it has a distinct strength from the properties of the plant, so I had to use it too.
I affectionately named this cocktail "To Madness And Beyond" in reference to the lyric from the awesome song from the Old Gods of Asgard "The Sea of Night", the exclusive track from their album "Rebirth" (that I got as CD along with 3 shirts of the band).
To Madness And Beyond cocktail recipe:
Absinthe, to rinse (I used La Pipette Verte from Distillerie Des Moisans, known for their cognac)
2 cl Hendrick's Orbium gin
1 cl Aki gin from Akayane
2 cl Heering Cherry Liqueur
1 cl Blood Orange Syrup from Monin
2.5 cl grapefruit juice
How to make:
Pour absinthe into Old Fashioned glass and leave to stand. Add all ingredients into mixing glass. Stir, throw, or shake with ice depending on the desired level of madness. Discard the absinthe of the prepared glass. Strain into the prepared glass.
Garnish (optional): twisted lemon or orange peel in the shape of a spiral "It's not a Loop, it's a Spiral"
