The Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, Alabama is a National Historic Landmark as the first capital of the Confederate States of America (before Richmond, VA) and served as the site where the Confederate Constitution was written. One hundred years later, the 3rd march for civil rights (from Selma to Montgomery) ended at the front marble staircase of the Alabama State Capitol, leading to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In addition to those iconic marble steps, major features of the capitol grounds include the Avenue of Flags and statues of Albert Patterson (assassinated attorney general elect), James Marion Sims (physician, considered the father of gynecology [read about this controversial figure]), and Joseph Lister Hill (45-year representative of Alabama in the US House of Representatives and US Senate). For some reason, they also have a bunch of monuments honoring traitors and supporters of human slavery, like Jefferson Davis, John Allan Wyeth, and the Confederate Memorial Monument.
