Effectively air sealing metal roof decks poses a significant challenge, as the seams of the metal deck and the corrugated nature of the material allow for airflow to pass through, depositing moisture from the interior into the roof assembly. This is exacerbated by penetrations in the metal deck from insulation screws and cover board fasteners, as well as other larger penetrations and intersections in the roof. Metal decks can be air sealed by installing an additional substrate with a self-adhered or fluid applied air and vapor barrier membrane, or by spraying closed cell spray foam over the corrugations to cover the seams and fastener penetrations. In this video, we discuss how to air seal a metal roof deck with a self-adhered air and vapor barrier membrane, and a self-adhered weather resistive barrier.
