Why do some neighborhoods stay cooler and have cleaner air than others?
In this episode of Why Do You Study That?, Duke postdoctoral researcher Danielle Wagner takes us into the field to explore how heat and air pollution intersect, and what those differences mean for the health of Durham residents.
Working in Mike Bergin's lab at Duke University, Danielle partners with community members across Durham who use air quality, weather, and wearable sensors to better understand the environments where they live. By combining scientific measurements with residents' lived experiences, her research aims to identify neighborhoods that are more vulnerable to heat and air pollution, and ultimately help create healthier communities.
This work is made possible through partnerships with local organizations, including El Futuro, whose deep connections within Durham help ensure the research reflects the needs and experiences of the community. As Gian Carlos and the El Futuro team emphasize, meaningful research begins by investing in people and the neighborhoods they call home.
