I sat down with TRT World to say something plainly: the heat isn't just uncomfortable. It's killing people. Germany alone lost 10,000 lives to heat this year, twice the number who died in the World Trade Center attacks and France and Italy have seen thousands more excess deaths. We keep photographing heatwaves as sunny-day postcards when what we're actually documenting is a body count. That has to change, starting with how honestly our leaders talk about it.

The good news is we already know what works. Shading alone can cut ambient street-level temperatures by 8–12°C. That's the difference between a heatwave that stings and one that barely registers. It starts small, with shutters and household fixes, but the real win is systemic: greening and "bluing" our cities with trees, bushes, and water networks instead of bare tarmac and concrete. Air conditioning has its place. It's essential on public transport but mass rollout into every home is expensive, high-carbon, and treats a symptom rather than a cause. Fans and natural shading get us further, cheaper, and cleaner. This is the kind of transformative, strategic adaptation the Climate Majority Project has been calling for. City and national leaders need to start implementing it now, before the next heatwave, and the one after that, and the one after that.
