Baroness (Maie) Casey (1892-1983) was an author, artist, collector, and connoisseur. She was also an advocate for modern art and owned a significant art contemporary art collection. Her husband, Baron (Richard) Casey (1890-1976), a conservative politician and diplomat, was appointed the Governor of Bengal in 1944 and spent two years in Kolkata. As Vice-Reine, Maie took a strong interest in the arts of Bengal, using her position to encourage the arts and crafts community and artists such as Jamini Roy and Rabindranath Tagore. She organised events at Government House, and purchased works of art from modernist Indian artists, and brought them back to Australia, where she exhibited them as part of her own collection. In the 1950s, she introduced Australian contemporary art to India. This webinar will explore her role in building connections between contemporary Australian and Indian art in the 1940s and 50s.

Michael Moignard spent 35 years as an Australian public servant working in trade and resources policy, and trade promotion. He holds a Masters in Science (Chemistry) from the University of Melbourne, a B.A. (Hons) in History and Economics from ANU, and a Diploma of Education from La Trobe University. Michael spent close to 7 years in India, as Senior Trade Commissioner for South Asia with the Australian High Commission in New Delhi. He first served in New Delhi from 1998 to 2000, and again from 2004 to 2008, most recently in late 2012. He also served with the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) in New York, Santiago de Chile, Manila, and Singapore.
Michael is an honorary Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute (AII). In September 2014, he co-founded EastWest Academy Pty Ltd, a small firm involved in assisting Australian business do business in India. He is a Director of EastWest Advisers. Michael is a Board Member of Ryder Cheshire Australia, and is President of its Victorian chapter. Michael was a member of the Australia India Business Council Victoria Committee from 2016 to 2018, and was President of the chapter from March to May 2017. He is currently finishing a PhD at La Trobe University in Australian art history.
