China strongly opposes the use of the Indo-Pacific security concept by the United States, its allies and partners, seen as an attempt to contain its rise. China is, however, developing a full-spectrum Indo-Pacific strategy to project power, assert its territorial claims and to extend its geopolitical and geoeconomic influence throughout the region. How are India and Australia responding to this challenge? What does the future hold for the Quad? How might the COVID-19 pandemic, and its devastating impact on India, affect the future security environment in the Indo-Pacific region? This event will focus on these questions and the broader security outlook in the region. The speakers will also take a closer look at the current state of Australia-India relations.

Professor Ian Hall is the Deputy Director (Research) of the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University, an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute, and the co-editor (with Sara E. Davies) of the Australian Journal of International Affairs. His research focuses on India’s foreign and security policies and the history of international thought. His publications include Modi and the Reinvention of Indian Foreign Policy (2019). He tweets at @DrIanHall.
Dr Pradeep Taneja is Senior Lecturer in Asian politics in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne, where he is concurrently a Member of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies and an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Asian Security and International Affairs. His publications include China Since 1978: Reform Modernisation and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics (with Mackerras and Young) and numerous book chapters and journal articles.
