I had to record it in windowed mode using the VEG mod for AoE2 Conquerors (a.k.a. AoC). The VEG mod also prevents red grass and purple water and such on newer computers. I don't know why DirectDraw is so screwed up compatibility-wise, but it is for some of these old games.
