I uninstalled and reinstalled the game to start fresh and tried using the settings from this thread: gog.com/en/forum/arx_fatalis/nvidia_users_may_want_to_try_this_maybe_ati

I still can't manage to play this game to my satisfaction. Maybe it's just impossible to run this game effectively on new machines.
