America's maps could be changing.
President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, but it's not clear how that order will play out. The U.S. can't force Canada or any other nation to rename the lake.
It's the same playbook as last year, when Trump signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America. It means all government institutions must rename that body of water, but it's up to private companies to decide what they want to do.
In the case of the Gulf of America. Google Maps changed the name for U.S. users, but retained the original name for those in Mexico.
Today's Lake America order comes as the U.S. and Canada intensify a trade war. The president has initiated 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods.
We're learning more about a close call between Marine One and another aircraft earlier this month. Scripps News investigative correspondent Patrick Terpstra says that both the jet's and the helicopter's pilots may have violated safety procedures.
On August 4, Marine One took off with President Trump on board at the same time that an American Airlines flight had just taken off from Washington Reagan National Airport. This was considered a loss of separation just under a mile between the helicopter and the commercial plane.
NTSB says that there seemed to be a communications failure that contributed to this loss of separation. The crew of Marine One said that they had tried twice to signal that they were about to take off, giving a standard 3 minute warning, but that they never got response from the control tower.
The FAA has made changes to the radio at Washington Reagan National Airport to try to prevent something like this from happening again.
And closing arguments wrapping up in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial. The jurors ended the first day of deliberations Thursday without a verdict.
Clancy is the mother who admitted to killing her three young children and then tried to kill herself back in 2023. Her defense argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings. The jury now has to decide with the Clancy is criminally responsible for her actions or if she is guilty due to insanity.
