Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald tell the story of writing What a Fool Believes and their 70s classic This Is it. At the time Michael McDonald was fronting one of the biggest bands in rock with the Doobie Brothers and the Kenny Loggins had just left a classic duo in Loggins and Messina to create a solo career… They had just collaborated on the grammy winning song What A Fool Believes about a year before and they were afraid they’d jinx their partnership.. so after a while apart they ran into a each other in the supermarket and said let’s just get together and write a piece of crap get that out of the way and then we can write a good one.. It’s the story of The smooth yacht rock classic This is It with the Co-Captains of the genre Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. It doesn’t get better than this.. Two of the most distinct voices ever!!! Michael had was fronting the Doobie Brothers at the time after some time with the Doobie Brothers. He was referred to the Doobies by Skunk Baxter when Tom Johnston was sick and had to step away . and Kenny had gone solo after dominating the 70s as part of the duo Loggins and Messina.
Kenny and Michael came together and wrote the grammy winning #1 hit What a Fool Believes. Both released their own versions but the Doobies version was the hit… but they won the grammy for song of the year and record of the year… After such a massive success they were a bit gun shy to write the next one together afraid of the sophomore jinx so they didn’t pursue it right off the bat until they ran into each other at the supermarket. I’ll let them tell you… A song that started out with a dynamite chorus. that both thought might be a love song until a life changing event happened in one of their lives and pretty much the universe expressed what the song should be about. It’s a great story coming up so jump on the yacht...
