AfriForum has released an explosive dossier targeting ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, raising serious allegations linked to corruption, fraud, and money laundering surrounding the controversial Dubai holiday scandal.
The dossier outlines claims that Mbalula and his family travelled to Dubai in December 2016 on a trip costing approximately R684,000. According to the report, around R300,000 was allegedly paid by Sedgars Sport, a company that had business ties to government structures, while the remaining funds were reportedly paid in cash from unknown sources.
These claims have sparked renewed questions about transparency, accountability, and whether senior political leaders are being shielded from prosecution.
AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, led by Advocate Gerrie Nel, argues that there is a prima facie case for corruption, fraud, and money laundering linked to the payments. According to Nel, the National Prosecuting Authority has allegedly been hesitant to prosecute Mbalula due to his political position.
The dossier also highlights that a previous Public Protector investigation found that Mbalula violated the Executive Ethics Code. Despite this, no prosecution followed.
Even more concerning, the dossier claims that a draft charge sheet containing multiple corruption charges was prepared but never pursued. This raises further questions about whether the justice system is failing to act against politically connected individuals.
AfriForum has now indicated that if the NPA decides not to prosecute, they are prepared to pursue private prosecution against Mbalula. Private prosecution allows civil organisations to take legal action when the state declines to prosecute.
In addition, AfriForum is reportedly progressing with a separate private prosecution case involving crimen injuria following statements made by Mbalula where a school principal was allegedly wrongfully identified as a child rapist. According to AfriForum, the docket has already been obtained and the matter is moving forward.
The dossier also takes an unusual step by calling for international pressure and possible sanctions against Mbalula. AfriForum is urging the international community to consider measures such as diplomatic pressure or sanctions under frameworks like the Global Magnitsky Act.
This development escalates the situation beyond South Africa and introduces a new dimension to the controversy.
The release of this dossier raises broader questions about accountability, political influence, and whether senior leaders should face greater scrutiny when allegations of corruption arise.
