In today’s Newsflash episode, we take a closer look at two controversial developments involving South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and ask a very important question: where is all the money going?
First, Ramaphosa is doubling down on the proposed Transformation Fund, a plan expected to channel R20 billion per year, or roughly R55 million every single day, into majority black owned businesses over the next five years.
Government says the fund is necessary to address historical inequalities and expand economic participation, but critics argue that South Africa already has decades of BEE policies behind it with little evidence of meaningful change for ordinary South Africans.
Will another massive fund create jobs and economic growth, or is government once again throwing taxpayer money at a broken system?
We also examine whether government policies themselves are preventing businesses from growing, investing, and creating employment opportunities.
Then we turn our attention to Ekurhuleni, where Cyril Ramaphosa told young South Africans they will be able to register for a new university next year.
There is just one problem.
The university has been in the works since 2020 and six years later there is still very little to show for it.
How can students be expected to enrol at a university that does not yet exist?
The story raises serious questions about government accountability, public spending, and whether South Africans are continuously being sold promises that never materialise.
