The animated cereal commercials that punctuated the afternoons and weekends, featuring characters from the shows produced by Jay Ward and Hanna-Barbera, had a bigger budget per minute than the cartoons themselves and were better animated and, in some cases, better written.
The ads were created in black and white because they were broadcast that way - but the cartoons themselves were filmed in color in anticipation of color TV being the norm, which was on the horizon.
