VIDEO INFO: The song choice for the opening number is slightly ironic, given the band were paid by far the largest fee of all the acts that played Woodstock ’94, but it was more than good value considering this entrance to the headline Saturday Night slot was delayed until 3.30am Sunday 14th August 1994 because of torrential rain and electrical problems that caused some persistent audio problems and equipment fails during the set, most of which were mercifully discreet. There aren’t many if any rock-showman as accomplished as Mr. Tyler (and prior to the Vegas residency; without the aid of inflatables, mechanised ramps, chorus girls, alter-egos, mascots, make-up or elaborate light shows) to vanquish such a gigantic stage and transform a river of muddy waters into the richest wine - this time at Saugerties NY rather than the original site of Bethel, a quarter of a century earlier.

The concept of an anniversary celebration didn’t meet with universal approval from critics (many convinced that, far from recreating the authentic enthusiasm of the late ’60s, the early ’90s rock renaissance was fatally tarnished by corporate greed) or middle-aged ex-hippies (seemingly convinced that the sins of the fathers should be visited on their children rather than revisited by them).

That criticism hardened on reports of half a million attendees (three times the number expected and ticketed) overwhelming staff, flouting rules on the consumption of alcohol and illicit drugs, and dumping an avalanche of litter into a tsunami of mud and overflow from the chemical khazies.

But, of course, for all the halcyon lustre which endures to this day, there was a lot less security and many fewer toilets at the original and it has since transpired that those reports of excessive violence and chaos at the re-run were largely exaggerated.
