20 May 1978 - The United States launched Pioneer Venus Orbiter on a mission to Venus on 20 May 1978 and Pioneer Venus 2 on 8 Aug. 1978.
26 Jun. 1978 - Seasat-A was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, by an Atlas-Agena launch vehicle on this date.
14 Aug. 1978 - NASA research pilot William Dana flew the first of 27 data flights in an F-15 equipped with a 10-degree cone in an experiment to improve predictions based on wind-tunnel data.
24 Oct. 1978 - Nimbus 7: Launched environmental research satellite with multiple instruments, one that provided the global evidence of Antarctic ozone depletion in the 1980s.
