Tune into our webinar series, SIAM MPE Community Meetings, organized by the SIAM Activity Group on Mathematics of Planet Earth: siam.org/membership/activity-groups/detail/mathematics-of-planet-earth.

This presentation was led by Francis X. Giraldo, Naval Postgraduate School Distinguished Professor, who discussed research in building operational weather prediction models as well as advancing the field for application in climate, space weather, and ocean dynamics.

In this video, Giraldo addresses the challenges in weather and climate modeling and the need for specialized time-integration methods to advance governing equations. He reviews element-based Galerkin (EBG) methods and describes how the contravariant form of discretization simplifies the application of horizontally explicit vertically implicit (HEVI) time-integrators for both regional and global models. This talk is based on extensive research in operational weather prediction models and advancements in climate, space weather, and ocean dynamics.
