Watch the latest SIAM Geosciences Webinar Series on multiscale image0-based modeling of plant soil interaction, led by Tiina Roose from the University of Southampton. This series is organized by the SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences: siam.org/membership/activity-groups/detail/geosciences.

In this video, Roose explains the critical role of soil in supporting essential crops and providing valuable ecosystem services. Soil acts as a buffer in hydrological systems, reducing flood risks, and stores significant amounts of carbon, mitigating climate change. Despite its importance, studying soil, particularly its interaction with plant roots, has been challenging due to its complex and opaque nature.

Roose's work integrates an innovative approach combining structural and chemical imaging methods to examine plant-soil interactions. They employ experimental data to refine and challenge modeling capabilities at biophysical scales, applying homogenization and scale-up techniques to extend findings from the rhizosphere to broader field contexts. Their research addresses fundamental questions such as:

(1) How does the rhizosphere influence soil ecosystems across various scales?
(2) What role does root-soil interface micromorphology play in plant nutrient uptake?
(3) How can insights from these scales inform predictions about the impacts of climate change, soil management strategies, and plant breeding on soil fertility?
