His scholarship essay speaks VOLUMES about this very special young musician: “A year ago, I never knew the impact that in-person MWROC would have on me. It was a week where I could enjoy sleepless nights with new friends, letting musical ideas erupt and flow through us; creating new music, rearranging our favorite songs, and having endless conversations punctuated by laughter. We formed vibrant landscapes of emotions, thoughts, and experiences, celebrating what makes us human with every bow of the string, the strumming of a chord, and singing of a verse, learning and living the power of music… MWROC showed me how incredible music can be, how it can help dig me out of my rut, and surprisingly, how rigorous classical training leads to better self-expression; after all, you must learn the rules before you can break them… Now, I wish to go back. After MWROC opened my eyes to the endless musical possibilities and gave me incredible confidence to just be myself and express myself through music, I embarked on a musical journey of sorts… Perhaps then I can be myself, a hodgepodge of cultures, styles, and genres, to tell my stories, express my feelings, create and destroy musical paradises and hellscapes, and find solace in who I am…I wish to broaden my skill set, sharpen my tools, and approach MWROC with a new focused perspective, to see how it can help me on my musical journey. I want to gain brand-new perspectives on music and the world, and there is no better place to do that than MWROC, a celebration of what makes us all unique. I want to meet new people from everywhere who will spin their tales and color my world in a way only they can, people who will shift, shatter, and rebuild my notions of the world. I want to forge new experiences, write new stories, and, most importantly, have fun in the place that feels most like home. I want to go back to my home where I can build palaces of music with the people I love to be with and who accept me for who I am. I want to be surrounded by the architects and world builders who teach us how to sound like ourselves, how to embrace our identities, and how to build cities of song and sonata together.”
