A student of David Diamond and Vittorio Giannini (among others), Adolphus Hailstork has successfully established his place in the American classical music scene. His role as a respected educator and professor of music has not seemed to hinder the composers growing output of works for all genres. Hailstork's works for voice and choral ensembles are numerous, but his orchestral music is equally welcoming and engaging for a wide audience. A good example of this would be An American Port to Call (1985), which the composer created as a reflection on the bustling life of the port city of Norfolk, Virginia.
