Australian Defence Force personnel deployed as Joint Task Force 629 (JTF629) are working side-by-side with state authorities in Western Australia and North Queensland from 3 to 19 July 2026 as part of Exercise Austral Shield 2026 (AS26).
AS26 is designed to exercise the Australian Defence Force’s short-notice response to a domestic security threat.
Led by JTF629, the exercise brings together Defence personnel, government agencies and emergency service partners to practice coordinated response to complex domestic security scenarios.
Exercises like Austral Shield are an essential part of maintaining an agile and ready force. The Australian Defence Force maintains short notice and specialist capabilities that may be called upon, under Government direction, to assist the civilian authorities in responding to domestic security threats.
