The School of Military Engineering (SME) at Holsworthy Barracks, NSW, is the premier training facility for the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). The School provides training to Army, Navy, Air Force and international Military Engineering roles. Over a period of three months for Initial Employment Training (IET), captured between the 24th and the 27th of February 2026, Army trainees complete training packages that include the Army Combative Program (ACP), High Explosives (HE) qualifications, MAG58, Grenade Launcher Attachment (GLA), 9mm weapons qualifications, tree felling, chipping courses and more. Completing their IET will qualify them as ‘Sappers’ – Combat Engineers, and Engineer Officers in the Australian Army.
