In this video, you’ll learn how to add leading zeros in Excel so numbers like 1 become 001, 7 becomes 007, and 45 becomes 045. Excel normally removes leading zeros because it treats numbers as numeric values, but with one setting you can keep them permanently.
The fastest way is to format the cells using Custom Format. Select the cells, open Format Cells, choose Custom, and type 000 for three-digit IDs, 0000 for four-digit codes, or any number of zeros for your required format. This keeps the number fully functional while displaying the leading zeros.
You can also use the TEXT function to convert numbers into text-based codes when needed.
