There’s usually a wide communal awareness and deep level of respect for artists known purely by their first name. It comes from years of delivering quality artistic output, to the extent that a mention of their surname is superfluous. Adalita is one of those artists. For the unaware, Srsen is the Croatian family moniker but it’s rarely used, not out of disrespect but because we simply know who you’re talking about when you mention her name. She’s the co-founder, singer and guitarist of acclaimed alt rock band Magic Dirt, talented solo artist in her own right and much sought after participant in rock n roll tribute theatre shows. This year Adalita adds Bleak Squad, a second band to her bow featuring Mick Harvey, Mick Turney and Marty Brown, with their debut album out on August 22 and live performance debuts happening too.
Back in the days when Australian Musician was published as a quarterly printed magazine, Adalita graced the front cover a couple of times. With a new band project to celebrate, it stands to reason that in the social media age that we revisit Adalita as our Musician of the Month, digital cover artist for August 2025. AM editor Greg Phillips caught up with Adalita to chat about her celebrated career, gear and the new band Bleak Squad.
