An often acrobatic forager, the black-and-white Downy Woodpecker is at home on tiny branches, slender plant galls, sycamore seed balls, and suet feeders. Here, a male deftly repositions himself around the suet feeder in Sapsucker Woods as other birds arrive for the morning buffet. He moves from one side to the other as larger birds encroach on his space, and at one point even clings to the feeder while reaching down to grab a bite from the tray.
