Male Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers visit the Cornell Lab FeederWatch Cam at the same time, giving us a great opportunity to compare these look-alikes. The larger Hairy Woodpecker alights on the hanging log feeder while the Downy Woodpecker feeds at the suet feeder. Overall size and bill length are often the most reliable field marks for telling these two black-and-white woodpeckers apart.

After the Hairy Woodpecker departs, another male Downy Woodpecker takes its place at the log feeder. This bird is an immature male, indicated by the red feathers on the crown rather than the nape.
