Episode 76: Nova Scotia Power, once a public corporation owned by Nova Scotia Taxpayers, was sold to Emera and privatized in 1992. In the past several years, Emera has been continually increasing the rates to the point where now we pay more than any other province in Canada for our electricity. The executives at Emera and Nova Scotia power make millions of dollars a year while we struggle to pay our power bills.
The Association of Communities and Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) thinks it's time to change that, return Nova Scotia Power ownership to the people, or at least allow other power companies into the market and create some competition to encourage Emera to lower power rates to something a little more reasonable; if they want to save money, start at the top and cut those enormous salaries back a bit.
