I decided to try my hand at some wood carving and chose oak leaves and acorns as my subject matter. It's a bit messy and certainly far from perfect but it was a lot of fun and a good challenge.
I took a reference photo and made an outline on a drawing program and then printed it off, using a pencil as a kind of carbon paper to get the drawing onto the wood. I wanted to take the sides down a little for the relief and so decided to use a V chisel to mark all the lines around the edges.
This was a quite fiddly wood carving project and something I'd like to attempt to make again now with hopefully more skill than I had back then!

Why not carve a pendant from an oak offcut? I realise this is my second carving project in a row...I guess Im in a carving mood! These little carvings were finished with a mineral oil and beeswax paste and then placed onto a leather cord. Its a pretty simple woodworking project that should only take a couple of hours at most.
Ive been using these as key fobs lately, theyre a very nice addition to my shed keys and really make a nice impression. Theres something about wooden keyrings that makes them nice to hold in the hand, comforting almost and its excellent to make something with your own hands. Sometimes just for the sake of making.

The second and final installment of the Drawer to Shelf Unit build sees all the finishing touches come together and varnish applied. This is a fairly simple DIY shelf project and will satisfy your craving for upcycling furniture (if you have such cravings).
I used pine for the shelves which was from some old shelves of my own. I then used some sapele for the fronts of the drawers recycled from a factory. Dowels from the outside hold the shelves in place.

A friend of mine wanted me to make her a version of an old game called Number Rumba which is now quite rare and hard to get hold of. Its a simple block game from the 80s where each team has to rearrange their blocks to match whats on a card. The first to rearrange their blocks correctly, wins. The blocks here are made of Oak and the rest is Sapele. I used some enamel paints suitable for toys to paint the blocks. Its a fairly simple woodworking project but should only be attempted if you have the patience to cut and sand 18 blocks!
