I’m just going to be blunt. Academics have biases. They just do. Why? Because they’re people. They often present their argument either through selective citation of material or by favoring material in the way they discuss it. They might mention something that contradicts them in a footnote, but they’re going to ride the other stuff to the end of the page. That’s just what they’re going to do.
And so, you should be thankful that there are people who devote their lives to mucking around in all these texts and paying lots of money to get degrees and spending their lives doing something as obtuse as chasing prepositions across a corpus. This is important stuff.
Somebody has to do this because there are going to be people (like other people and me) who use this data. We can tap into this data and present a fuller picture of what’s going on. And we can say things like, “Look, this is an unnecessary conclusion to draw based on the data—not based on what I want to believe, but based on the data.”
