Ever since I first tried to record one of these sirens in 2013, I've been fascinated with the Alertronic siren series as well as the three Oak Ridge siren systems. This is my third attempt at recording one of the K-25/ETTP AL-6000R's, and much to my dismay, it was another unsuccessful recording. While I did get a decent ambience of a rather surprising amount of other Alertronics, it was still pretty disappointing, as this is a bucket list thing for me. And as far as the ambience goes, what makes it so surprising is that there should only be about three Alertronics audible from my vantage point. That leaves a few options: either there are Alertronics that have started working again, they carry really well, or they're just damn loud. Hopefully I can determine that last one in June.
As far as the system goes, it's used for emergencies surrounding/in the former K-25, now East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) site. K-25 was a facility that enriched uranium until 1985. Much of the uranium enriched in this facility went towards the production of the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan during WWII. The Alertronics were likely installed sometime in the 80's, perhaps when the decontamination process began. Given the secure nature of the facilities in Oak Ridge, it can be difficult to gather any information on these systems. Anyways, enjoy!
