About the modes and tones of Black Hole Ringdowns

Binary black-hole (BH) ringdowns comprise of countably infinite excitation of the characteristic frequencies of BH called the quasi-normal-modes (QNM). Measuring this QNM spectrum is called BH spectroscopy and is a powerful probe to test the nature of the BH. Excitation of different modes of QNM depends on the mass ratio and the spin of the progenitor binary BH system. In this talk, I will summarise what are the sets of QNMs that are excited in a BH ringdown as a function of the mass ratio of the binary BH system. Further, I will talk about the implications of this study on performing BH spectroscopy with LISA.
