The ears decide everything on a mini pipe cleaner teddy bear. Too wide and it reads as a mouse; high and close together, and the same round shape turns into a bear from across the room.
The first one was homemade too. A candy shop owner in Brooklyn saw a newspaper cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt lowering his rifle rather than shoot a bear on a Mississippi hunting trip, and asked his wife to sew a plush version of the cub. It went in the shop window under a sign that read Teddy's bear, and it sold almost at once. The orders that followed turned a penny candy counter into a toy company.
Shaping the head and body comes first, then setting the ears and muzzle so the face lines up, bending the arms and legs so the bear sits up on its own, and tucking the cut ends where they can't scratch anyone. Nothing here needs a needle. Pipe cleaners, small beads for the eyes and nose, and a dab of glue are the whole supply list, and the pace is slow enough for a first-timer to follow along.
