A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster that launched from Florida struck the surface of the moon early Wednesday, creating a new crater after spending more than a year drifting through space.

NASA said the upper-stage rocket impacted the moon around 2:35 a.m. ET at roughly 5,400 mph, striking near the Einstein and Bell craters.

The agency said the crash was not expected to pose any danger to Earth, but it was expected to leave a crater about 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep, sending dust and rock flying outward.
