Sometimes referred to as the Los Angeles "Nuclear Escape Tunnels," these two abandoned highway tunnels were part of an ambitious plan in the 1960s to provide a fast, northerly route out of Los Angeles via the San Gabriel Mountains in Shoemaker Canyon. The tunnels were built, but the highway never was.
