Here is one of my all time favorite trucks I’ve filmed, and one I am really excited to share with everyone after a really lucky trip one morning. I figured this would be a cool post to finish out an awesome year of filming trips and cool trucks that nobody else has filmed.
A Peterbilt 310 paired with an Amrep Octo Front Load body was an iconic combo dozens of trash haulers invested in when each product first hit the market in the mid 1980s. Well into the 1990s, it was a garbage truck that was a dime a dozen throughout the greater Los Angeles area. If you visit LA now, you’ll see a much different scene. While nearly every hauler has transitioned their fleets to quieter natural gas trucks, a lot of searching has to be done to find a truck like this one that is miraculously still running strong 30 years later.
Some might call it a testament to the durability and reliability of old diesel engines however I believe a small hauler like AAA puts time and effort into appreciating and maintaining these classics, and prides themselves in keeping them running just like it did over 3 decades ago. Even better is that they still run 3 of these daily, and along with a couple Macks and Volvos, it is without a doubt one of the coolest small hauler fleets in the region.
Despite the awesome fleet, finding the trucks are no easy task. Starting the day well before the sun comes up, most of these trucks finish their routes just as the majority of people are waking up. Hence you’ll see a lot of dark shots in the video which I tried to make up for by adjusting the lighting during editing. With all the areas they service being open market, to call the stops spread out is an understatement. A distance of a mile or more between each to be expected. It is also quite easy to lose such a dark colored truck to the dimly lit rows of warehouses just south of downtown. Therefore I have to give a huge thanks to the driver for telling me where he was going next and for being so friendly and welcoming with me following along.
When time allows, I will attempt to film some more of AAA. Again, huge thanks to the driver for letting me film!
