A poor orphan selling papers in a cold winter storm is taken in by a middle-aged couple and their bratty little son. The street waif, grateful, is a joy around the house. The spoiled son is not too happy about having a new brother to share attention with Mom and Pop, and lights a fire which nearly destroys the house. Angered, the father throws the poor street urchin out into the cold. But the orphaned newsie gets back at the son by calling to him via the chimney. The son confesses to starting the fire, and the father finally welcomes the orphan back to the family.
