For nearly 900 days of World War II, Adolf Hitler was based at his secret command centre hidden in the forests in the Mazurian lake district, in what was East Prussia but is now found in north-eastern Poland. On July 20, 1944, Oberst Claus Von Stauffenburg attempted to assasinate Hitler with a bomb he left under a table at the day's Situation meeting. Though the bomb detonated and killed four people Hitler survived. Von Stauffenburg was captured later in Berlin and executed the following day.
The huge network of bunkers were dynamited before the Red Army could reach them in January 1945, but the camp is open to the public and is best visited with a local tour guide.

Although this old cemetery is seldom visited by anyone apart from the occasional animal enthusiast out to walk his dog, its a fascinating place to stroll about for an hour or so. Most of the headstones are from the 19th century and tell tales of tsarist bureaucrats who will be dearly missed, but a small section is also dedicated to fallen communist soldiers crowned by a large gold-coloured monument depicting a soldier carrying a Soviet flag. One bizarre stone also immortalises roughly a dozen orphans who were supposedly drained of their blood by the Nazis. The orthodox church and chapel are also worth a quick peek.
