In this peaceful NamibiaCam sighting, four giraffes arrive at the waterhole to drink before slowly moving off again. A group of giraffes is often called a tower, especially when they are standing together and here we get a beautiful look at how these tall animals behave when visiting water in an open landscape.
At first glance, this almost looks like a small giraffe family, with younger giraffes standing between larger adults. In reality, giraffe groups are often very flexible. They do not always move as fixed families. Females, young giraffes, and sometimes adult males may come together for a short time, especially around important places like waterholes, before separating again.
Drinking is also an important and vulnerable moment for giraffes. Because of their long legs and necks, they often need to lower themselves carefully to reach the water. This is why giraffes usually stay alert, look around often, and take turns watching their surroundings while others drink.
This short visit gives us a simple but fascinating look at giraffe behaviour: calm, cautious, social, and perfectly adapted to life in Namibia’s open desert landscapes.
