Een Truerich Droeuich Leyt
1 A sad and doleful care,
This news, dear brother, share,
Which God hath now for me prepared.
A chastening He applies,
My inmost heart He tries,
My flesh in sore affliction lies.
His godly wisdom sure that ever shall endure
Knows perfectly that now I lie In anguish sore.
Help, Lord, I Thee implore that I by grace once more,
After this grievous blow may comfort know!
2 The prophet has averred
With clear and clarion word
That grief is mortal man's reward;
His life ebbs fast away,
Till death him low doth lay
With suff'ring, all the weary way.
Like to a fading flower So is His fame and pow'r,
Like shades of night
Man takes his flight, Continues not.
In state or constant lot
As God himself hath taught;
Now I detect that He deals so with me.
3 The Father's chastenings sore
Most gladly I endure
As Micheas did, the saint of yore.
I by His Word confess
To wretched sinfulness,
The sinful lusts of human flesh;
I, born of Adam's seed, am sinful-born indeed;
Therefore will I right willingly
Chastisèd stand; Accept all at His hand,
Like Job of storied land,
Till me He to Him takes and blessed makes.
4 Ah, faithful Father, Lord,
My flesh has strength no more,
This earthly house Thou breakest sore.
The vile world hates me quite,
For this Thy witness bright;
Thy cross I bear with grief not light.
And yet—adversity! Thy hand Thou lay'st on me,
And presses so my flesh lays low!
Yet rest me upon Thy promise free
Which ever sure shall be;
And praise Thy majesty in all eternity!
5 Ah, Father, God and Lord,
Incline Thy face once more
In this disease and sickness sore;
Give patience, strength, in grace
The brightness of Thy face,
Mid sorrows that come on apace!
That I may constant be, whate'er Thy way with me;
And, not the last, my soul hold fast!
Yes, Father, kind, preserve in pious mind
Thy sons, who sadness find,
In faith and doctrine whole, so prays my soul!
6 I beg my brethren all,
Who've heard the Master's call
My grief and pain now to recall,
And then, before God's eyes
Lay pleasant sacrifice;
Let pleasing prayer as incense rise;
That I may then again, delivered from this pain,
Behold Thy grace, resume my place,
Serve Christ alway, right well the livelong day,
This is my song I pray
With brethren everywhere, in Word-borne prayer.
Amen.
