In light of the strategic withdrawal of US commitments to Europe as of 2025 and the total failure of the GWOT in 2021, we see the gradual decline and fall of the US Empire. At the dawn of this empire, William Graham Sumner delivered a speech to the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Yale University, on January 16, 1899, entitled "The Conquest of the United States by Spain" discussing the pitfalls and dangers of empire. I feel it is timely and instructive to visit this prescient speech and compare where the US is at present with the predictions he made over 100 years ago about the cost of empire.
