In 2024 Mitsubishi announced the integration of a security module with Nozomi software into select models of their MELSEC PLCs. This is, to S4's knowledge, the first integration of a security model with access to the PLC backplane. The potential for PLC EDR, VPN, firewall, and very granular OT security capabilities are vast.
S4 invited Kobayashi-san of Mitsubishi to present:
- Why Mitsubishi choose to integrate a security module?
- The different integration options (such as hardware card) and why the current approach was selected
- An architecture overview and the ability to access backplane data and act on backplane data
- A bit of futurecasting on what this means for Mitsubishi, its customers and the industry
