The greatest stories to come from the #UCDavisVetMed are of animals who might be euthanized if not for the treatment they receive here. Today, we're introducing you to one such patient: Johnny Cash the Pug in Black.

Johnny Cash received a treatment that was pioneered at UC Davis more than 10 years ago by professors and oral surgeons Drs. Frank Verstraete and Boaz Arzi: using bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) to regrow missing jawbone. One of the first procedures was done in 2012 on a Munsterlander dog named Whiskey who had lost jaw bone from #cancer.

A foster, Johnny Cash likely lost a portion of his jaw from an attack by another dog. As you’ll see in the video, the procedure is the same as it was for Whiskey—creating a metal bridge between the remaining jawbone pieces for the new bone to grow around.

Since Whiskey's procedure, the surgery has become somewhat routine here—Johnny Cash’s surgery only took about an hour—and we’ve also proven it can work in other areas, such as leg bones. In the video, you’ll see a crowd of people—not because they are all needed, but because we are training a new generation of surgeons to take the procedure beyond #UCDavis.

This month, we’re opening the new Meadowview Foundation Dental and Oral Surgery Center, which will enable us to do even more procedures and train more specialists! The center was made possible by generous donors who wanted to see UC Davis have an even greater impact.
