Deep in Costa Rica’s rainforest, the Bribri people live according to ancient traditions—governed by the land, shaped by hardship, and led by women. Reaching their territory means traveling upriver and crossing thick jungle. But the real journey begins upon arrival, where survival depends on adapting to a way of life both physically demanding and spiritually complex.
Carlos, a non-Indigenous man, fell in love with Xiomara, a Bribri woman. Marrying into her community was just the beginning of a transformation. Isolated in the forest, with no money, no home, and no farm—just jungle—they built everything from nothing. Life was grueling. Food was scarce. Clothes were hard to come by.
But Carlos faced more than poverty. In the Bribri social order, men—especially outsiders, or Sikuas—hold no authority. Power lies with the women, who are seen as the guardians of tradition and the transmitters of culture. Xiomara, his wife, carries this responsibility with quiet strength. When customs are in danger of being broken, it’s her role to intervene and uphold the order.
In Talamanca, survival is not just about enduring the forest—it’s about respecting a social system where women lead, and where ancient laws are stronger than any modern influence.
